2 CRITICAL COMPONENTS TO A SUCCESSFUL TRAINING SESSION October 2009 Shooting Tip
It’s not uncommon to load up our gear, head to the range, stand in the first box and ask ourselves, “What do I want to work on today?” Consider a more productive approach.
To get us on the same page – 2 definitions: “Practice” is more about reinforcing and strengthening a skill already learned. “Training” is all about learning and building an undeveloped skill.
1. Decide beforehand, specifically what technique, strategy, scoring skill or specific target presentation you want to work on. What presentation, distance and speed? Reading target lines more accurately — then holding those lines during the swing. Key to intercepting every target punctually – devote a session to marking more accurate, more advantageous “hold points.” How does our “gun mount” look? Do we own the best shooting method for the A bird? XXXXXX or X0X00X? The B bird? And the list goes on. No doubt a less formal approach to a training session may lead to some broken birds. But I’m wondering what our shooter would say at the end of the day if asked, “What did you learn today?”
2. The whole point of a training session is to take what we don’t do very well and learn to do it better — and more consistently. And that especially includes our form because here we’re working on a specific target presentation, one that is giving us difficulty. Go to that presentation. Now, maybe by one-third or one-fourth, decrease the distance to the target and/or decrease the target speed until we can break 1 out of every 4 or 5. Right there is where we should be standing. Not so far away that we can’t hit any — and not so close that we can break them all. The best spot to TRAIN on is just slightly outside the line where struggling begins. Just outside our comfort zone. I would rank this component in training as the # 1 most important to getting this shot right — and into our inventory. Consistently.
In closing, I cannot overstate the importance of # 2. Make sure you can hit the target some of the time. Standing on that spot, shell after shell, 0 after 0, might be torturous. No fun at all. To that I say — you’re right. But — do we really want this shot? These are the push-ups and sit-ups. Look hard. Find the gun mount, swing or strategy error. I guarantee you this. Patience and tenacity here will be rewarded. Your X% will begin to climb — if you keep working. TRAINING on that spot with serious repetition to find and correct the error is the absolute shortest and fastest path to the skill advancement you seek here. These are the building blocks to a complete game — and the consistency that everyone wants.

When we speak of college scholarship application, the burden is always on the parents. Since they have the responsibility over the education of their children and they know what will be good for them, parents apply personally for the college scholarship of their children.
What if we turn the tide? From primary to secondary education, your parents accepted the responsibility. But you are old enough to take care of a simple college scholarship application. It takes some courage, self-confidence, and some excellent academic records to apply for a college scholarship.
Keep in mind that is you who will utilize the financial aid that comes with the scholarship and not your parents. Thus, applying for a college scholarship is now your business, and you can do it with less supervision from your parents.
The procedure for college scholarship application is similar when you apply for college. You need to learn every scholarship opportunity available and make a list of potential prospects that you think will fit your personal needs.
Once through with the list, you need to create an application letter and state your achievements (good high school scholastic records and recommendation letters from your high school director and teachers) and you are now on your way on getting into college for less, if not for free.
The above-mentioned procedure is the most common way of getting a college scholarship. However, the chances of success lies in you, and you need to exert more effort to assure yourself of a financial aid when you go to college. To increase your chances, here are some pointers that you can consider:
- You should start as early as your high school years. There are many college scholarships that open during your senior high school year. In addition, these financial aid programs are only open in a specific period of time. Once the application closes, you have to wait for another year before you can file for your application. Starting early will give you better chances of getting the best financial aid available.
- Give importance to the scholarship requirements. Keep in mind that among all available scholarships, there are only few that will fit your qualifications. Read the eligibility standards of the college scholarship that you want to apply. If you found out that the financial aid does not fit with the qualifications that you have, search for another. Do not insist yourself on scholarships where your chances of success is minute.
- Do not forget to complete the requirements asked by the college scholarship. Prepare the documents that are commonly asked by the scholarship grantee to its applicants.
- Your application letter will be your “speaking alter-ego” to the sponsor of the college scholarship you have applied for. Thus, you need to create an application letter that will convince the sponsor that you honestly need the financial aid and you deserve to get one, state honest information in your application. Never include false information especially if your purpose is just to “flatter” the sponsor with your achievements.
After you followed the aforementioned recipe, you are now ready to submit your application to the scholarship screening committee. Be prepared for other requirements (such as interviews and examinations) that will determine if you are eligible to receive a college scholarship.
Follow the aforementioned college freshman’s recipe when you apply for a college scholarship. And best of all, do not forget to pray that the sponsor would consider you eligible for the college scholarship. Good luck!

The process of getting ready to send a son/daughter to college can present many confusing choices. This is especially true if you are sending your first child to college. There are over 3000 colleges to choose from. Each college has its own unique offering of courses and activities. In addition to all of the mailings that are sent to home there are hundreds of college websites that offer information. Starting your college search in the 9th or 10th grade gives your student an opportunity to tour different types of colleges.
Each high school student should talk to college students and faculty to get a better picture of the level of community on their campus. Some students and parents look at the name of a college to determine where they will pursue an undergraduate degree. A student can go after the big name but maybe the college does not really have the major that they want. Some colleges are located in an urban city while others are located in a suburban or rural city. Not only must you look at the size of the college you should also look at how far it is from home.
Many parents and students get consumed with discussions about the cost of college. The price of college can range from $20,000 – $50,000 for public or private college education. Colleges are trying to move into the 21st century in terms of technological resources for students who are enrolled. For example, maintaining a wireless internet campus requires staff. The staff is hired to manage the college’s hardware and software. Students can use their laptops to complete class assignments and to send e-mails to their professors. Even if you have a family income over $100,000 you should complete the federal financial aid form. There are certain academic scholarships and student loans that require the completion of the federal aid form.
Choosing a college should be a students own decision. The college that their friend selects may not be for them. They are making an investment in themselves that could affect their career options. It is best to choose a college that fits their personal and professional goals. Your student can take a career test at their high school to get a clearer picture of a career that may interest them. These career tests are easy to complete and they provide a lot of useful information. Your son/daughter can sit down with their high school counselor and talk about a variety of careers. They should research the career and the types of jobs that completing a certain college degree will offer.
I If you are sending the first person in your family to college recognize that you are not alone. Attend a college night at your son/daughter’s high school or attend a college fair in your city. You will get to meet admissions officers who are more than happy to answer your questions. Make the senior year a time of joy rather than anguish. Meet with your college counselor early during the school year and you will develop an effective college search plan. Despite the initial challenges you will help your student to choose their college dream. Dr. Stephen Jones is author of the “Seven Secrets of How to Study.
